Chhattisgarh has emerged as the leading Indian state in rainwater harvesting, announcing a new state‑specific ‘Catch The Rain’ programme to boost water storage and usage.

The Chhattisgarh government said it now ranks first among Indian states in rainwater conservation, based on recent data on harvested volume and storage infrastructure. The administration has introduced a state‑wide “Catch The Rain” plan that will expand community and household rainwater harvesting structures, especially in drought‑prone districts.

Under the scheme, local bodies will receive technical guidance and financial incentives to install rooftop and surface catchment systems. The plan also earmarks funds for reviving traditional ponds and constructing new check‑dams to capture runoff during the monsoon.

Officials expect the initiative to augment groundwater levels, reduce dependence on external water supplies, and support agriculture in the region. The program will be rolled out in phases, with pilot projects already underway in several districts.

The state aims to set a replicable model for other regions, positioning Chhattisgarh as a benchmark for sustainable water management in India.
