A university professor in Chhattisgarh was taken into custody after sending an obscene video to a student and threatening to lower the student’s practical marks.
A faculty member of a Chhattisgarh university was accused of sending an explicit video to a student enrolled in his practical class and warning that the student’s marks would be reduced if the matter was not kept quiet. The incident came to light after the student reported the material to the college authorities.
Police in the state acted on the complaint, detained the professor and opened an investigation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with obscenity and intimidation. The accused was produced before the local magistrate and placed in judicial custody.
The university issued a statement confirming that the professor’s teaching duties have been suspended pending the outcome of the probe. Officials said they are reviewing internal grievance mechanisms to prevent similar misconduct in the future.
Legal experts note that such behavior can attract charges of sexual harassment, criminal intimidation and distribution of obscene material, which carry stringent penalties under Indian law.
