The Chhattisgarh High Court has intervened after police failed to act on a First Information Report filed in Raipur concerning derogatory remarks about the Prophet.

The Chhattisgarh High Court issued a notice to the state police after learning that a First Information Report (FIR) lodged in Raipur regarding online derogatory remarks about the Prophet had not been acted upon. The court’s intervention underscores the judiciary’s willingness to ensure that complaints of religious insult are investigated promptly.

The FIR, registered by a private complainant, alleged that certain social media posts contained language deemed offensive to the Prophet, violating sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act that criminalise hate speech and blasphemy. The complainant sought a swift police inquiry, but officials reportedly delayed any action.

In its order, the High Court directed the Raipur police to register the case formally, record statements, and submit a status report within a stipulated timeframe. The bench also warned that continued inaction could attract contempt proceedings.

Legal experts note that the court’s move may set a precedent for faster judicial oversight in cases where religious sentiments are allegedly hurt, balancing freedom of expression with protection against hate speech.
