Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel arrived in Odisha to meet state officials and focus on resolving the long‑standing Mahanadi water sharing dispute between the two states.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of Chhattisgarh flew to Odisha on Tuesday, marking the first official visit to the eastern state since the water sharing talks began in 2016.

During the trip, Baghel met with Odisha’s Chief Minister and senior ministers to review the progress of the Mahanadi water sharing agreement. The discussions centered on the allocation of 1.2 million cubic meters of water per year, a figure that has been a sticking point for both sides.

Baghel reiterated Chhattisgarh’s willingness to cooperate and urged both governments to expedite the finalisation of the treaty. He also highlighted the importance of the Mahanadi basin for agriculture, industry and drinking water supply in the region.

The visit comes after a series of negotiations that have seen both states agree on a framework but still lack a legally binding settlement. The CM’s presence is seen as a step toward bridging the remaining gaps.

Officials said the meeting concluded with a joint statement calling for a swift and fair resolution, emphasizing the need for transparent data sharing and joint monitoring of water flows.
