The Union government refuted Karnataka’s claim that E20 fuel is substandard, stating that laboratory tests confirm the blend meets prescribed quality norms.
New Delhi – The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a statement countering Karnataka’s allegation that the E20 ethanol‑petrol blend supplied in the state is of inferior quality. The ministry said that samples taken from Karnataka were examined in accredited laboratories and were found to comply with all applicable Indian standards for fuel quality.
Karnataka officials had earlier raised concerns that the blend did not meet the expected specifications, prompting a request for a detailed review. In response, the centre highlighted that the testing methodology adhered to BIS guidelines and that the results showed no deviation from the prescribed parameters for octane rating, ethanol content and emissions.
The central government’s clarification aims to reassure consumers and stakeholders that the E20 fuel being rolled out across the nation remains safe and consistent with the government’s push for higher ethanol blending. No further action has been announced pending any new evidence.
