The Union government clarified to the Supreme Court that the pending NRC rejection slips for 19.07 lakh residents of Assam are delayed due to administrative and verification processes.

The Union government has responded to a query from the Supreme Court regarding the pending National Register of Citizens (NRC) rejection slips for 19.07 lakh residents of Assam. The government clarified that the delay is due to administrative and verification processes.

The NRC, finalized in 2023, required the issuance of rejection slips to those who did not meet the criteria. While most slips were issued within the stipulated time, a significant number remain pending.

In its explanation, the Ministry of Home Affairs highlighted that the backlog is being addressed through additional manpower and streamlined procedures. It also mentioned that the government is coordinating with state authorities to expedite the process.

The Supreme Court, which had earlier directed the Centre to provide a detailed account, will review the government's response before deciding on further action. The pending rejection slips remain a key issue in the ongoing NRC implementation in Assam.
