The Union Ministry has dispatched a fresh consignment of onions to Tripura, aiming to curb price spikes ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Newly dispatched onion consignments have begun moving from central warehouses to Tripura, a step taken by the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs to stabilise market rates as the festive period approaches. The shipment, often termed an "onion express," is intended to augment local supply and temper any upward pressure on retail prices.

Retailers in Tripura have reported a noticeable rise in onion demand as festivals draw near, prompting concerns over affordability for households. By introducing additional stock from central pools, authorities expect to ease the price surge and provide a buffer against short‑term shortages.

State officials have welcomed the intervention, stating that they will closely monitor market responses and coordinate with local traders to ensure the consignments reach retail outlets promptly. The central government has previously employed similar measures in other regions facing seasonal price volatility.

The move forms part of a broader strategy to safeguard food security and maintain price stability across essential commodities during high‑demand periods, reinforcing the government's commitment to consumer welfare.
