New Delhi – The central government has announced that the 2024 census operations in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand will be accelerated to finish before the scheduled state elections. Officials said the adjustment is intended to avoid any overlap between the massive data‑collection exercise and the electoral process, ensuring both activities can be conducted without logistical strain.
The decision was communicated to the state election commissions and the census department, which will now deploy additional field teams and extend working hours in the four states. Authorities expect the revised timeline to allow the release of preliminary demographic data ahead of the voting dates.
Election observers have welcomed the move, noting that a completed census can provide clearer insight into constituency demographics, which is crucial for fair representation.
