A decade after demonetization, India’s cash usage remains robust even as UPI transactions soar. The shift to digital payments has not erased the country’s deep‑rooted cash habit.

In 2016, the Indian government abruptly demonetized ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, sparking a nationwide scramble for cash and digital alternatives. A decade later, the country’s payment landscape has evolved dramatically, yet cash remains a staple in everyday transactions.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched the same year as the note ban, has grown into a dominant channel for person‑to‑person and merchant payments. Its real‑time, app‑based transfers have attracted millions of users, especially in urban and semi‑urban areas.

Despite this surge, recent surveys indicate that a significant share of transactions still involve physical currency. Small‑scale vendors, informal sector workers, and rural consumers continue to rely on cash for its immediacy and familiarity.

The coexistence of cash and UPI highlights a gradual, rather than abrupt, shift in India’s payment culture. While digital adoption is accelerating, the entrenched cash habit remains resilient, shaping policy and business strategies for years to come.
