The Comptroller and Auditor General has highlighted that only 5.34 lakh of the 27.14 lakh MGNREGA works slated for Jammu and Kashmir have been completed, indicating major shortfalls in the scheme’s implementation.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) released a performance audit of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Jammu and Kashmir, revealing that out of the 27.14 lakh works approved for the state, merely 5.34 lakh have been completed. The audit underscores a completion rate of just under 20 percent, far below the targets set by the central government.
The shortfall raises concerns over the scheme’s ability to provide guaranteed rural employment, especially in a region where seasonal migration and limited livelihood options are prevalent. Unfinished works also imply that allocated funds may remain unspent or be diverted, affecting both wage earners and local infrastructure development.
State officials have been asked to submit a detailed action plan to the CAG, outlining corrective measures, timelines for pending projects, and steps to improve monitoring mechanisms. The central Ministry of Rural Development is expected to review the findings and may consider additional oversight to ensure that the remaining works are executed promptly.
