Scientists from Dr. Harisingh Gour University have detected cadmium and other heavy metals in the water of Pachmarhi lake, warning of heightened cancer risk and ecological harm.
A research team from Dr. Harisingh Gour University conducted a water quality analysis of Pachmarhi lake in Madhya Pradesh and reported the presence of cadmium along with several other heavy metals. Laboratory tests indicated concentrations that exceed recommended safety limits for drinking and recreational water.
The scientists cautioned that prolonged exposure to cadmium and similar metals is linked to an increased risk of various cancers, kidney dysfunction, and respiratory problems. They emphasized that communities relying on the lake for domestic use could face serious health hazards if the contamination is not addressed promptly.
Beyond human health, the study highlighted potential adverse effects on the lake's aquatic ecosystem, including toxicity to fish and disruption of microbial balance. The researchers have recommended immediate monitoring by state environmental authorities and the implementation of remediation measures to reduce metal levels before they pose irreversible damage.
