India’s Union Cabinet has approved a Small Hydro Power Development Scheme aimed at expanding clean energy access in remote and rural regions.
The Union Cabinet approved a Small Hydro Power Development Scheme on Tuesday, marking a new step in India’s push for renewable energy. The scheme focuses on harnessing small-scale hydroelectric projects, typically under 10 MW, in remote and rural areas where grid connectivity is limited.
Under the plan, the government will provide financial assistance, technical support and streamlined clearances to local developers and community groups. The objective is to generate clean electricity, reduce dependence on diesel generators and create sustainable employment opportunities.
The Ministry of Power has outlined a phased implementation schedule, with pilot projects slated to start in the next fiscal year. The scheme is part of the broader national strategy to increase renewable energy capacity and meet climate commitments.
Officials say the initiative will also help improve local infrastructure, such as roads and transmission lines, thereby boosting overall development in underserved regions.
