The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Jammu and Kashmir High Court bench in Ladakh, extending the region's judicial infrastructure.
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet gave its nod on Thursday to set up a bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The decision, announced through a press release, aims to bring higher judicial services closer to residents of the sparsely populated region, which currently relies on courts located far away in Jammu and Srinagar.
The move follows long-standing demands from local leaders and civil society groups who have highlighted the logistical challenges faced by litigants traveling long distances for hearings. Officials said the new bench will handle civil, criminal and service matters, reducing case backlogs and improving access to justice.
While the exact location of the bench has not been disclosed, authorities indicated that it will be situated in the territorial capital, Leh, and will become operational once necessary infrastructure and staffing are in place. The cabinet's approval is expected to accelerate the appointment of judges and the allocation of resources.
The establishment of the bench is also seen as a step towards integrating Ladakh more fully into the national judicial framework, complementing recent efforts to enhance governance and development in the high‑altitude region.
