A rewilding initiative on the South Downs has transformed 330 acres of intensive farmland back into natural woodland, leading to a record rise in two of the country’s most endangered butterfly species.

The South Downs rewilding scheme in Britain has successfully converted 330 acres of land, previously degraded by intensive agriculture, into thriving natural woodland. The project, led by local conservation groups, aims to restore native habitats and enhance biodiversity across the region.

Since the commencement of the rewilding effort, the area has seen a marked increase in wildlife, most notably two extremely rare butterfly species that were on the brink of extinction. Monitoring data indicate that the populations of both butterflies have risen to record levels, signalling a positive response to the restored habitat.

Conservation experts attribute the success to the removal of intensive farming practices, the planting of native trees, and the creation of a mosaic of habitats that support the life cycles of these delicate insects. The project is being hailed as a model for large‑scale ecological restoration.

Stakeholders hope that the South Downs example will inspire similar rewilding initiatives elsewhere, contributing to broader efforts to combat biodiversity loss and climate change.
