BRICS leaders highlighted the growing climate risks faced by the Global South and called for increased financial support to mitigate impacts.
During the latest BRICS summit, leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa underscored the heightened climate risks confronting the Global South. The group noted that rising temperatures, extreme weather events and sea‑level rise disproportionately threaten developing economies.
The BRICS statement called for a substantial increase in climate finance, urging developed nations and international institutions to expand funding mechanisms such as the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund. It also urged the creation of new financial instruments tailored to the specific needs of vulnerable countries.
India, as a leading BRICS member, emphasized that adequate financing is essential for implementing adaptation projects, strengthening infrastructure resilience and safeguarding livelihoods. The call aligns with India’s own climate action plans and its push for a global climate fund.
The leaders concluded that timely and sufficient financial support will be pivotal in preventing the worst impacts of climate change in the Global South and in fostering sustainable development across the BRICS bloc.
