The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has ordered a citywide school holiday on July 6 after the India Meteorological Department raised a red alert for heavy rainfall across Mumbai.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Friday that all schools in Mumbai will remain closed on July 6. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure following the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) issuance of a red alert for the city, indicating the likelihood of intense and potentially hazardous rainfall.
IMD’s red alert warns of sustained heavy showers that could exceed 100 mm in some parts of the metropolis, raising concerns about waterlogging, traffic disruptions and safety hazards for commuters. Meteorologists expect the worst of the downpour during the early afternoon, a period when school children would normally be traveling to and from campuses.
By declaring a holiday, the BMC aims to minimise the risk of accidents and reduce strain on emergency services. Public transport agencies have also been advised to increase frequency of buses and local trains on alternate routes to accommodate commuters who must travel for essential work.
Officials have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid non‑essential travel, and keep emergency kits ready. The city’s disaster management cell will monitor the situation closely and issue further advisories if conditions worsen.
