BJP tables motion to oust J&K Assembly Speaker over Omar Abdullah's statehood resolution

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally introduced a motion in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly demanding the removal of the Assembly Speaker. The motion was tabled after the Speaker allowed a resolution that called for full statehood for the union territory.
The resolution in question was submitted by former chief minister Omar Abdullah, who has long advocated for Jammu and Kashmir to be restored as a full state. BJP legislators argued that the Speaker’s decision contravened the party’s stance on the region’s constitutional status and therefore warranted disciplinary action.
If the motion gains majority support, it could lead to the Speaker’s removal and trigger a re‑election for the post, adding further political tension to an already sensitive issue in the region.
