BJP spokesperson Dilip Ghosh called for unrestricted police action against criminal gangs in West Bengal, saying the force needs a free hand to curb violence.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said on Thursday that the West Bengal police must be given full authority to combat organised crime and gang activity in the state. He argued that bureaucratic constraints and political interference have hampered effective law‑enforcement, allowing criminal networks to operate with impunity.
Ghosh, addressing a press conference in Kolkata, urged the state government to remove procedural hurdles that delay investigations and arrests. He suggested that a "free hand" for the police would enable faster action, better intelligence sharing, and stronger deterrence against gang‑related violence.
The statement comes amid rising concerns over gang‑related crimes in several districts of West Bengal, where law‑makers have reported incidents of extortion, illegal land grabs and violent clashes. While the police have launched several operations in recent months, Ghosh believes a more aggressive stance is required to restore public safety.
Political analysts note that the call reflects broader tensions between the ruling state party and opposition leaders over law‑and‑order policies. No official response from the West Bengal government has been released at the time of writing.
