A newly constructed railway line in Bihar will allow freight trains to avoid Patna, reducing congestion on the busy Delhi‑Howrah corridor.
The state government of Bihar has inaugurated a dedicated freight corridor that skirts around Patna, the capital city. Designed to divert cargo trains away from the congested passenger routes, the line connects existing tracks north and south of the city, creating a seamless bypass for goods movement.
Officials say the bypass will alleviate pressure on the heavily trafficked Delhi‑Howrah main line, which carries a mix of passenger and freight services. By separating freight traffic, punctuality of long‑distance passenger trains is expected to improve, benefitting commuters across the eastern corridor.
The project, part of a broader push to modernise India's rail infrastructure, was completed ahead of schedule and is now operational. Early reports indicate a noticeable reduction in freight‑related delays on the Delhi‑Howrah route, underscoring the strategic importance of the new line for national logistics.
Railway authorities plan to monitor traffic patterns closely and may consider similar bypasses in other congested urban centres to further streamline freight operations.
