The Bihar government announced that six regional languages will be introduced as subjects for first and second‑grade students, with the State Council of Educational Research and Training beginning textbook development.

The state government of Bihar has approved the inclusion of six regional languages in the curriculum for students of classes 1 and 2. The move aims to strengthen linguistic heritage at the foundational level of schooling.

Under the new scheme, children in the first two years of primary education will receive formal instruction in each of the six languages identified by the education department. The specific languages have not been listed in the announcement, but they represent the major vernaculars spoken across the state.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been tasked with preparing textbooks and teaching materials for the new subjects. SCERT officials said the textbook drafting process has already begun and that the resources will be aligned with the existing syllabus framework.

State education officials indicated that the initiative is expected to promote cultural diversity, improve early‑grade learning outcomes, and provide a more inclusive educational environment for children from different linguistic backgrounds.
