A student from Bihar has created a smart helmet that can detect and stop a rider under the influence, a project inspired by a road accident he witnessed as a child.
A young engineering student from Bihar has unveiled a prototype smart helmet designed to intervene when a rider is under the influence of alcohol. The device incorporates an alcohol sensor that triggers an automatic lock on the helmet, preventing the rider from moving the bike until sobriety is confirmed.
The concept originated from a traumatic road crash the student observed during his childhood, which left a lasting impression about the dangers of drunk driving.
According to the developer, the helmet also sends real‑time alerts to a linked mobile app, allowing family members or authorities to be notified of a potential violation.
The prototype is currently being tested in collaboration with a local technical institute, with plans to seek patents and commercial production if field trials prove successful.
If adopted widely, the technology could add a new layer of safety to India's road‑traffic ecosystem, where alcohol‑related accidents remain a major cause of fatalities.
