The Bihar government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to undertake a joint operation for clearing silt that accumulated in the state’s rivers after recent floods.
Patna, Nov 3 (Hindustan Times) – The state administration of Bihar and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at removing the massive silt deposits that rivers have accumulated following this year’s monsoon floods.
The agreement outlines a coordinated effort that will involve the deployment of specialised dredging equipment, mobilisation of technical teams and the use of existing road‑construction machinery to clear the riverbeds. Both governments say the initiative will help restore normal water flow, reduce the risk of future flooding and improve the condition of waterways that serve as critical transport corridors.
Officials indicated that the project will commence within weeks, focusing initially on the most silt‑laden stretches of the Ganga and its tributaries in Bihar. Funding will be shared, with MoRTH contributing central resources and the state covering operational costs. The partnership reflects a broader push to mitigate flood damage and enhance river‑bank infrastructure across flood‑prone regions.
Stakeholders, including local farmers and transport operators, have welcomed the move, citing expectations of better irrigation, safer navigation and reduced water‑logging in adjacent areas. The MoU also calls for periodic monitoring to assess the effectiveness of the cleanup and to plan further interventions if required.
