The Bihar government has announced plans to develop 12 new townships across the state, with Tirhut in Muzaffarpur among the sites earmarked for urban development.
The Bihar government today unveiled a comprehensive plan to establish 12 new townships across the state, aiming to boost urban infrastructure and create employment opportunities. Among the selected sites is Tirhut, a locality in Muzaffarpur that will receive significant investment in housing, roads, and civic amenities.
The initiative is part of the state’s broader urban development strategy, which seeks to decentralise growth and reduce congestion in existing cities. Each township will be designed with mixed‑use developments, green spaces, and modern utilities to accommodate a projected population of up to 200,000 residents.
Tirhut’s location on the banks of the Ganges makes it a strategic point for trade and tourism. The government plans to integrate the township with existing transport links, including a new rail spur and upgraded road network, to improve connectivity with Muzaffarpur and surrounding districts.
Construction is slated to begin in the next fiscal year, with phased completion expected over the next five to seven years. Officials anticipate that the new townships will attract private investment, generate jobs, and provide a model for sustainable urban growth in Bihar.
