Bihar Constable Accused of Marriage Scam and Dowry Demand in Chapra

A police constable in Chapra, Bihar, has been accused by a young woman from Nalanda of deceiving her with a false marriage proposal, refusing to cohabit after the ceremony, and demanding a house in Patna as dowry.
The constable, identified as Mo. Asif, who is posted at the Bhagwan Bazar police outpost in Chapra, was alleged by a Nalanda resident to have pretended to be interested in marriage only to extract financial benefits. According to the complainant, the officer promised marriage, proceeded with the ceremony, and then refused to live with her, citing personal reasons.
Following the broken promise, the woman claims the constable demanded a house in Patna as part of the dowry, a request she says is illegal and abusive. She lodged a formal complaint at the Chapra police station, providing details of the alleged exploitation.
Chapra police officials confirmed that the complaint has been registered and the matter is being forwarded to the district superintendent for further investigation. No arrest has been made yet, and the constable has not been questioned publicly.
Legal experts note that demanding property as dowry is a punishable offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act, and misuse of authority by a police officer can attract additional charges under the Indian Penal Code.
