Bihar has announced a new silt management policy, becoming the first state in India to formalise measures for controlling river silt. The policy aims to address sediment buildup and its impact on agriculture and flood risk.

The Bihar government unveiled a silt management policy that formalises strategies to monitor and reduce sediment accumulation in the state's rivers. Officials said the move responds to recurring challenges of reduced water flow and soil erosion that affect both irrigation and flood control.

As the first Indian state to adopt such a framework, Bihar hopes the policy will set a precedent for other flood‑prone regions. The guidelines include regular riverbed surveys, coordination with the irrigation department, and promotion of best practices among farmers to prevent excessive silt deposition.

Stakeholders anticipate that better silt management will improve agricultural productivity and lower the frequency of flood‑related disruptions. The government plans to roll out the policy in phases, beginning with the Ganga and its major tributaries that run through the state.
