Bidar: Maruti Boudhe Urges Water Conservation to Prevent Crisis
Bidar: Maruti Boudhe, State Organizational Director of Karnataka State Farmers Association, warned that water, which should be freely available from nature, may soon become more expensive than milk if conservation and environmental protection are not prioritized. Speaking at a seminar held at Siddhartha Pre-University College on September 29, organized jointly by Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha Dharwad, Siddhartha PU College, Team Yuva, and Buddha Belaku Social, Educational and Cultural Trust Bidar, he emphasized the critical need to protect the Karej system and natural resources.
Maruti Boudhe highlighted that 30 years ago, families had to walk 3-4 km to fetch water, but with increased wells and borewells, water is now available at homes. However, overuse of groundwater and environmental degradation could worsen the water crisis. He also noted environmental harm caused by deforestation and urged everyone, including children and elders, to plant trees. Vitthaldas Payage, Syndicate member of Bidar University, called for awareness among students, youth, women, and organizations to plant trees and use water judiciously. Vinay Malge of Team Yuva presented on the history and significance of the Karej water system introduced in Bidar in the 1420s by Bahmani Sultan Ahmad Shah through Persian technology, which still supplies groundwater without pumps or electricity.
The seminar also covered Bidar's historical droughts, dependency on borewells, and the ecological impact of altering natural water flows. Emphasis was placed on proper water management to reduce agricultural issues and migration. Team Yuva has documented over 250 wells and 110 tanks, collaborating with district administration on conservation projects, including the 2016 revival of Naubad Karej, recognized by the Karnataka State Award. Various officials, activists, and hundreds of students participated, reinforcing the collective responsibility to preserve water, clean air, and soil for future generations.
