The historic Bada Talab in Bhopal continues to be plagued by illegal encroachments despite seven separate directives issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The tribunal’s orders, aimed at restoring the water body’s original boundaries, have not translated into complete de‑encroachment on the ground.
According to the latest monitoring report, 365 encroachments were identified across the pond’s perimeter, but the removal work remains incomplete. Local authorities have cleared only a fraction of the flagged structures, leaving large sections of the lake still occupied by unauthorized constructions.
Petitioner Rashid Noor, who filed the original NGT petition, has now demanded an on‑site survey to demarcate the pond’s true limits, especially after recent heavy rains highlighted the extent of the encroachment. He warned that if the survey and subsequent removal are not undertaken promptly, he will approach the Supreme Court for further relief.
The NGT has yet to issue a fresh compliance deadline, and officials in Bhopal have indicated that logistical and legal challenges are delaying full enforcement. The situation underscores the difficulty of translating environmental orders into actionable outcomes on the ground.
