Taxi unions in Bhopal launched a strike protesting the rise of bike‑taxis and the dip in earnings caused by lower fares offered by online aggregators.

The taxi driver community in Bhopal has called for a citywide strike, alleging that the proliferation of bike‑taxi services is eroding their customer base. They contend that online platforms such as Ola and Uber have slashed fares to attract riders, leaving traditional four‑wheel operators with reduced earnings.

Union leaders said the lower fare structures not only hurt drivers' livelihoods but also compromise service quality, as drivers are forced to work longer hours for less pay. They demanded a review of fare policies and stricter regulation of bike‑taxi operations within the city limits.

The protest has drawn attention from local authorities, who are monitoring the situation to prevent disruption of commuter services. While negotiations are underway, the strike remains in effect, with drivers urging the government to intervene and ensure a level playing field for all transport providers.

The dispute underscores the broader challenges faced by India's urban transport sector as new mobility options reshape competition and pricing dynamics.
