The Bhopal Municipal Corporation ordered the sealing of 109 establishments deemed illegal in six assembly segments, prompting anger among shop owners who say the action threatens jobs and livelihoods.
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation carried out a large‑scale sealing operation targeting establishments that were identified as illegal occupants. A total of 109 shops and commercial units across six assembly constituencies were ordered closed, and several of them were forcibly sealed by municipal officials.
Local traders reacted with strong displeasure, arguing that the sudden closures are jeopardising their sources of income and the livelihoods of their employees. Many shop owners claimed that the action has already led to loss of work for daily wage earners and threatens the economic stability of the neighbourhoods.
Business representatives have called for the implementation of the city's master plan before any further enforcement, insisting that a clear, transparent framework is needed to resolve illegal encroachments without harming legitimate commerce.
Municipal authorities, however, maintained that the operation was necessary to enforce zoning regulations and to curb unauthorized use of public land, stating that the sealed premises were identified after a series of inspections.
The situation remains tense as traders continue to voice their concerns, while the corporation plans to review the seized properties in line with the upcoming master plan rollout.
