Bhopal merchants protest sealing, demand master plan revision at Gandhi statue

Merchants gathered at Mint Hall near the Gandhi statue in Bhopal on Wednesday, holding a prayer meeting to oppose recent sealing orders in residential areas and urging authorities to update the master plan.
On Wednesday, a group of merchants assembled at Mint Hall, directly in front of the Gandhi statue in Bhopal, to stage a prayer meeting protesting recent sealing actions in residential neighbourhoods. The gathering was organised to voice collective frustration over notice orders that have led to the sealing of commercial premises operating within these zones.
The participants emphasized that their opposition is not directed against traders or residents, but against what they perceive as an abrupt implementation of the master plan without adequate consultation. They argued that the current plan restricts legitimate business activities and hampers the livelihood of many small shop owners.
Merchants called on the municipal authorities to revise the master plan and carve out a clear pathway that balances urban development with the needs of local commerce. They urged the administration to issue a revised layout that would prevent further sealing and provide legal certainty for businesses operating in mixed‑use areas.
The protest remained peaceful, with participants singing devotional songs and reciting prayers. No official response from the Bhopal municipal corporation was reported at the time of writing.
