Bhopal intern doctors protest for ₹30,000 stipend; police fire water cannon, student hurt

Intern doctors at Hamidia Hospital staged a protest near the Chief Minister’s residence in Bhopal demanding a hike to their monthly stipend to ₹30,000. Police halted the rally 200 metres away, deployed a water cannon and a clash left a student injured.
Bhopal – A group of intern doctors from Hamidia Hospital gathered near the Chief Minister’s House on Tuesday, demanding that their monthly stipend be raised to ₹30,000. The medical trainees, who receive a modest allowance during their internship, said the current amount does not meet basic living costs.
Police units stationed around the CM residence intercepted the protesters about 200 metres from the gate. Officers first attempted verbal warnings, but when the crowd continued to advance, a water cannon was activated to disperse the demonstrators.
During the ensuing scuffle, a student who was part of the rally sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The doctors allege that police also resorted to baton charges and physical assault, a claim that the authorities have not yet confirmed.
The incident adds to a growing wave of protests by junior medical staff across several Indian states, who are pressing for better remuneration and working conditions.
Local officials have said they will review the stipend demand, but no official statement on a possible increase has been released yet.
