Bengaluru civic body withholds occupancy certificate after landowner refuses road widening

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has withheld the occupancy certificate for a newly constructed building after the landowner of an adjoining plot refused to provide the portion of land earmarked for a road‑widening scheme. The civic body said the certificate cannot be granted until the required land is acquired, as the project aims to improve traffic flow on a congested arterial road.

Developers of the building have warned that the delay could affect tenants and investors who are awaiting legal possession. Without the occupancy certificate, the premises cannot be lawfully occupied, which may lead to financial losses and possible legal disputes.

BBMP officials indicated that they are pursuing negotiations with the landowner and have opened the matter for a possible acquisition under the Karnataka Land Acquisition Act. No final decision on compensation or timeline has been announced, and the issue remains under review.
