Traditional Bengal‑style Durga Puja has begun in Panambur, a coastal area of Mangalore, marking the start of the festive season.
Panambur, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Mangalore in Karnataka, witnessed the launch of a Bengal‑style Durga Puja on Tuesday, as reported by the regional daily Udayavani. The festivities feature a traditional pandal adorned with a towering idol of Goddess Durga, crafted in the artistic conventions of West Bengal.
The celebration includes customary rituals such as the chanting of mantras, offering of flowers, and the rhythmic beats of dhak drums, recreating the ambience of Kolkata’s iconic puja grounds. Cultural programs showcasing Bengali folk music and dance are also scheduled throughout the week.
Local residents and visitors have gathered to partake in the prayers and communal meals, reflecting the growing popularity of regional cultural exchanges in coastal Karnataka. The puja is expected to run for several days, culminating in the traditional immersion of the idol in the nearby river.
Udayavani highlighted the event as a testament to the city’s diverse cultural fabric, noting that the Bengal‑style observance adds a distinct flavor to the region’s festive calendar.
