A strengthening low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has prompted the Indian Meteorological Department to issue red alerts for West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded the status of a low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal to a severe cyclonic storm, prompting red alerts for the coastal states of West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The red alert, the highest level of warning, advises residents to stay indoors, secure loose objects and be prepared for heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible flooding.
Meteorologists predict rainfall totals of 200–300 mm in some districts, with the risk of flash floods in low‑lying areas. The IMD has urged local authorities to activate emergency response plans and to monitor the system closely as it moves northward.
The warning remains in effect until the system dissipates or moves away from the Indian coastline, with updates to be issued regularly by the IMD.
