The newly opened Bairabi‑Sairang railway stretch in Mizoram has carried around five lakh passengers in its inaugural year, marking a significant boost to connectivity in the state.

The Bairabi‑Sairang railway line, a 51‑kilometre stretch linking the Bairabi junction with Sairang near Aizawl, was inaugurated last year as part of the Northeast Frontier Railway’s push to improve connectivity in the far‑east. In its first twelve months of operation, the line has transported roughly five lakh passengers, according to the railway authorities.

The new corridor has shortened travel time between the state capital and the national rail network, offering a faster and more reliable alternative to road journeys that were often hampered by terrain and weather. Local commuters, tourists and traders have all benefited from the regular passenger services now running on the route.

Railway officials say the passenger figures underscore the latent demand for rail travel in Mizoram and point to further economic opportunities, including increased tourism and smoother movement of goods. The line is also expected to integrate with future extensions that will link the state more closely with the rest of the country.

Stakeholders, including state officials and business groups, have welcomed the development, noting that improved rail connectivity can spur investment and create jobs in the region. The Bairabi‑Sairang line thus marks a milestone in Mizoram’s transport infrastructure.
