Baba Mahakal adorned with bhang at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple on Shravan Trayodashi

On Shravan Shukla Trayodashi, a special bhang‑based decoration ceremony was performed for Baba Mahakal at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, drawing large crowds for the early morning Bhasma Aarti.
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh – At approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday, the Mahakaleshwar Temple conducted the traditional Bhasma Aarti on the Shukla Paksha Trayodashi of Shravan. The ritual began with a Panchamrit ablution of Baba Mahakal, followed by an elaborate adornment using bhang, representations of the sun and moon, a trident, a three‑eyed motif, a silver crown and a garland of skulls.
The use of bhang, a cannabis‑based preparation, is customary in certain Shaivite observances and was applied to the deity’s idol as part of the festive embellishment. Devotees gathered in large numbers, chanting mantras and offering prayers throughout the early morning hours.
Temple officials said the ceremony reflects the deep cultural significance of Shravan for Shiva worshippers and highlighted the temple’s role in preserving these age‑old traditions. Security and crowd‑management measures were in place to ensure a smooth conduct of the event.
