The 169‑kilometre hill section around Lumding has been electrified, making Assam’s rail gateway 100% electric and boosting connectivity in the Northeast.
Indian Railways has completed the electrification of a 169‑kilometre hill stretch in Lumding, Assam, achieving full electric traction across the state’s railway network, which serves as the main gateway to the Northeast region.
The project, executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, replaces diesel locomotives on this challenging terrain, promising lower fuel costs, reduced emissions and smoother operations for both passenger and freight services.
Completion of the Lumding section aligns with the government’s broader push for greener transport infrastructure and is expected to enable faster, more reliable train schedules across the region.
Railway officials anticipate that the fully electrified corridor will attract additional freight traffic, improve punctuality and support economic growth in Assam and neighbouring states.
