Assam Villages Deploy Repellent Machines as Elephants Approach

Elephants have been increasingly venturing into villages in Assam, prompting local communities to adopt a new strategy to keep the animals at bay. In several rural areas, residents now activate electric repellent machines whenever they spot elephants near their fields. The devices emit high‑frequency sounds and low‑level electric pulses that are believed to deter the large mammals without harming them. Farmers report that the machines have helped reduce crop damage and have made the villages feel safer. Local authorities are monitoring the effectiveness of the approach and are considering expanding the program to more districts.
