The Assam Rifles recovered tobacco products valued at about Rs 5.4 crore and methamphetamine worth roughly Rs 76 lakh during a recent operation in Mizoram, officials said.
Assam Rifles announced that a joint operation in Mizoram resulted in the seizure of large quantities of contraband tobacco and illicit narcotics. The force recovered cigarettes estimated at Rs 5.4 crore and methamphetamine with a street value of about Rs 76 lakh.
According to a statement released by the unit, the seizure was part of an ongoing effort to curb smuggling networks that use the northeastern corridor to move illegal goods across state borders. The operation involved a team of personnel who inspected a vehicle suspected of carrying the contraband.
The spokesperson for Assam Rifles said the recovered items will be handed over to the appropriate civil authorities for further investigation and that the force will continue to monitor and disrupt similar illicit activities in the region.
Law enforcement agencies have highlighted the growing concern over the infiltration of narcotics and counterfeit tobacco products in the Northeast, urging tighter surveillance and cooperation among states.
