Assam-Meghalaya taxi row eases as talks resume, core demand still pending

Negotiations between Assam and Meghalaya have reduced tensions over the cross‑border taxi issue, but the principal demand of the Meghalaya transport lobby remains unresolved.
The long‑standing dispute over cross‑border taxi services between Assam and Meghalaya has seen a de‑escalation after recent talks between the two state governments. Officials from both sides reported that the immediate friction over the operation of taxis at the border has been eased, allowing services to resume under a provisional arrangement.
Despite the calming of tensions, the Meghalaya Transport Association’s primary demand – the granting of a permanent permit that would allow its operators unrestricted access to Assam’s interior routes – has not been met. The association continues to press for a formal agreement that would address revenue sharing and regulatory oversight.
State transport ministers said further discussions are scheduled for the coming weeks, aiming to reach a comprehensive settlement. In the meantime, commuters are advised to check the latest guidelines before traveling across the border.
