Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a new initiative to provide free treatment to more than 14,000 children diagnosed with congenital heart disease. The scheme will cover all medical costs, including surgery, medication, and post‑operative care, at government hospitals across the state.
Under the program, children will be screened and referred to the state's tertiary care centres, where specialised cardiac surgeons will perform the procedures. The government has earmarked funds to ensure that the treatment is accessible to families regardless of their economic background.
Congenital heart disease is a leading cause of infant mortality in India, and Assam has previously launched pilot projects to improve early detection. This expanded effort aims to reduce the burden on affected families and improve survival rates.
