Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across Assam, raising the death toll to 95 and prompting authorities to keep 14 districts on high alert.
Heavy monsoon rains over the past week have swollen rivers and breached embankments across Assam, leading to extensive flooding in several districts. The Assam Disaster Management Authority has reported that the death toll has risen to 95, with many more people missing or trapped in waterlogged areas.
In response, officials have placed 14 districts—including Guwahati, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh—on high alert, activating emergency protocols and deploying rescue teams. Local police and the Assam Armed Police have been mobilized to conduct search and rescue operations and to secure vulnerable communities.
The state government has set up temporary relief camps and is distributing food, blankets, and medical supplies to affected residents. Rescue helicopters and boats are being used to reach isolated villages where road access has been cut off.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the central government to provide additional resources, while the Assam Chief Minister has promised a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for displaced families. Authorities are monitoring river levels closely and have warned residents to stay away from low-lying areas until the waters recede.
