Congress leaders and supporters gathered in Dibrugarh to protest the state government's plan to shrink the Kaziranga eco‑sensitive zone, fearing adverse impacts on wildlife and local livelihoods.
Earlier this week, members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee assembled in Dibrugarh, holding placards and chanting slogans to oppose a government proposal that would reduce the eco‑sensitive zone surrounding Kaziranga National Park. The gathering drew a sizable crowd of party workers, local residents and environmental activists, all demanding that the existing protective boundaries remain unchanged.
Protesters argued that any contraction of the zone could jeopardise the park's fragile ecosystems, endanger its iconic rhinoceros population and disrupt the livelihoods of communities that depend on regulated tourism and forest resources. They warned that the move might set a precedent for further encroachments in other protected areas across the state.
The Congress delegation called on the state administration to halt the draft amendment and to engage in a transparent consultation process with stakeholders. While officials have not issued a final decision, they indicated that the proposal is still under review, leaving the outcome uncertain.
