Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a bamboo bicycle program aimed at encouraging environmentally friendly transport across the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched a bamboo bicycle scheme in a ceremony attended by state officials and local entrepreneurs. The program is designed to promote low‑cost, eco‑friendly mobility options, especially in rural and semi‑urban areas where conventional bicycles are less affordable.
Bamboo, a fast‑growing renewable resource abundant in the region, is being used to construct sturdy yet lightweight frames. The government expects the initiative to reduce carbon emissions, create livelihood opportunities for bamboo growers, and lower dependence on motorised transport.
The scheme will initially roll out in select districts, with plans to expand based on demand and feedback. Participants will receive subsidised bamboo bicycles and training on maintenance, aiming to make sustainable commuting accessible to a broader segment of the population.
