Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that a newly identified drug route linking Myanmar, Arunachal Pradesh and Tinsukia poses a serious security challenge for Upper Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam publicly highlighted the emergence of a fresh drug trafficking corridor that runs from Myanmar, traverses Arunachal Pradesh and reaches Tinsukia in Upper Assam. He described the route as a "worrying signal" for the region's law‑and‑order situation.
According to the CM, the corridor exploits the porous borders of the northeastern states, allowing illicit narcotics to flow into the heart of Assam. While exact volumes were not disclosed, the strategic location of Tinsukia—close to both the Arunachal border and major transport links—makes it a vulnerable entry point.
Sarma urged state security agencies to intensify surveillance, strengthen border patrols and coordinate with central forces to disrupt the network. He also called for community awareness programmes to curb local demand and prevent the corridor from gaining a foothold in Upper Assam.
