Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the deteriorating condition of roads in Silchar, linking the congestion and potholes to massive infrastructure projects valued at around Rs 15,000 crore. He explained that the scale of the works, which involve extensive construction activities across the city, has temporarily disrupted normal traffic flow and accelerated wear on existing road surfaces.
The CM emphasized that the projects are part of the state government's broader push to boost connectivity and economic growth in the Barak Valley. While acknowledging the inconvenience faced by commuters, he assured that the works are essential for long‑term development and that remedial measures are being taken to minimize disruption.
Local authorities have been instructed to prioritize quick repairs and improve traffic management around construction zones. The government has also promised to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as the projects progress.
Sarat Chandra, a resident of Silchar, expressed frustration over the delays but said he hopes the completed projects will eventually ease travel and support local businesses.
The statement comes as the state continues to allocate significant funds to infrastructure, aiming to enhance regional integration and attract investment.
