The Assam cabinet approved the creation of eight new co‑districts to enhance local governance and service delivery across the state.
The Assam cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, gave the go‑ahead for operationalising eight new co‑districts in a recent meeting. The move is part of the state government's effort to decentralise administration and bring government services closer to citizens in remote areas.
Under the new arrangement, each co‑district will function under the jurisdiction of an existing district but will have its own dedicated administrative officers to handle day‑to‑day matters. Officials said this structure will streamline service delivery, improve coordination among departments, and address local issues more promptly.
The cabinet also instructed relevant ministries to allocate necessary funds, set up required infrastructure and finalize the implementation timetable. The co‑districts are expected to become functional once the preparatory work is completed, though exact dates were not disclosed.
