The Assam state cabinet has cleared the Hydrocarbon Policy 2026, aiming to attract investment and accelerate oil‑gas exploration in previously untouched regions.

Assam's cabinet gave the green light to the Hydrocarbon Policy 2026, a framework designed to draw both domestic and foreign investors into the state's largely unexplored oil and gas basins. The policy outlines fiscal incentives, faster clearances and a revenue‑sharing model to make exploration financially attractive.

Officials said the move aligns with Assam's broader strategy to harness its hydrocarbon potential for revenue generation, job creation and reduced reliance on imported energy. The cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, expects the policy to be operational by the end of the year, with the state petroleum department overseeing implementation.

Environmental clearances and community consultations are built into the plan, though the exact list of untapped blocks is still being finalised. The government hopes the initiative will position Assam as a significant player in India's energy landscape.
