The Assam state cabinet has cleared the establishment of eight new co‑districts, aiming to improve administrative efficiency and local governance.

Guwahati, Aug 19 (ET) – In a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam cabinet gave the green light to create eight new co‑districts across the state. The decision is part of a broader effort to decentralise administration and bring government services closer to residents in remote areas.

The newly approved co‑districts will be carved out of existing districts, with separate administrative offices and dedicated officers to handle local matters such as land records, health, and education. Officials said the move is expected to reduce bureaucratic delays and improve resource allocation.

State officials indicated that the restructuring will be implemented in phases, with the first set of co‑districts becoming operational by the end of the fiscal year. The cabinet also discussed related measures to strengthen youth welfare and revise labour regulations, but the co‑district initiative was the primary agenda item.

The announcement has been welcomed by local leaders who argue that smaller administrative units can better address region‑specific challenges, especially in Assam's hilly and border areas. Implementation details, including staffing and budget allocations, will be released in the coming weeks.
