The governments of Assam and Meghalaya have jointly appealed to the centre to end the ongoing border standoff between the two states.

New Delhi was approached on Monday by senior officials from Assam and Meghalaya, who urged the Union government to intervene and settle the long‑standing border dispute that has recently flared into a standoff. The two state administrations said the impasse is disrupting local administration, trade and the daily lives of residents living along the contested frontier.

According to the joint statement, both states are prepared to engage in a mediated dialogue, but they stress that a swift resolution is essential to prevent further escalation. They have highlighted incidents of road blockades and occasional clashes between local enforcement agencies as evidence of the deteriorating situation.

The centre has not yet issued a formal response, but sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs indicate that a high‑level meeting may be scheduled in the coming days to chart a path forward. Meanwhile, officials from both states have called for calm and cooperation from the public while negotiations are underway.

The border dispute, rooted in historical demarcation issues, has periodically resurfaced over the years. This latest appeal reflects the growing concern among regional leaders that the standoff could affect broader security and development initiatives in the Northeast.

Stakeholders, including local business owners and community leaders, have expressed hope that a prompt settlement will restore normalcy and revive cross‑border commerce that is vital to the economies of both Assam and Meghalaya.
